Based on the principle of ¡°effective protection, rational utilization and enhanced control¡±, Zhongshan government put emphasis on excavation, reorganization, protection, development and utilization of celebrity culture and historical cultural resources, establishing the philosophy of changing historical and cultural resources into effective resources shared with the public. Moreover, according to the building orientation of differentiation, serialization, diversification and miniaturization, museums with special features will be built at four levels. The first level include museums invested by the government and mainly for public benefits, such as Dr.Sun Yat-sen Museum and Zhongshan Museum; museums at the second level are combined with cultural industrial development, social and economic benefits, like Xiang¡¯shan Commercial and Cultural Museum, China Radio Museum (Zhongshan); the third level are mainly thematic museums combined with local characteristic economy with functions of collection and exhibition, like Da Chong Rosewood Carving Art Gallery and Gu Zhen Lighting Museum; the fourth level include thematic museums held by group or individuals.
In the beginning of 2008, Zhongshan made the strategic plan to establish the national historical and cultural city. By scientifically organizing, deeply excavating, carefully protecting and reasonably utilizing the rich material and intangible cultural heritages, Zhongshan made remarkable achievements. Cui Heng village was identified as the third batch of National historical and national village by State Ministry of Construction, State Ministry of Culture and State Cultural Relics Bureau. The speed to protect and develop the neighboring areas of former residence of Dr£®Sun Yat-sen was accelerated, the work of purchase and protect old dwellings was carried out, while residential and agricultural display areas were extended and enforced. What¡¯s more, the municipal government invested more than 17 million yuan to renovate many historical and cultural relics and buildings, such as Chen Ancestral Hall, former residence of Lu Haodong and former residence of Zheng Guanying. The latter two has been open to the public.
There are one key cultural relics under state protection and 15 provincial heritage conservation units in Zhongshan, including 1 ancient tomb of Ming dynasty, 2 former residences of celebrities, 5 historic buildings and 7 representative buildings, like the former residence of Yang Yin, the former residence of Lu Haoding, groups of buildings of Zhongshan Memorial School in Cuiheng village, Nanlang town, tomb of He Jungang of Ming dynasty in Ban Fu town, Yanzhou academy in Chang Zhou village in the west district, ancestral hall of Huang Family, the tower on Yandun Hill in Shiqi district and so on. In addition, there are 22 municipality protected historic sites like Xi Shan Temple and Tomb of Yang Xianyi and so on. In 2009, the 3rd Cultural Relic Census was launched in Zhongshan, completing field studies in 6 towns with new discovery of 223 scenic points and editing the feasibility report on museums.
The general survey of intangible cultural heritage has achieved initial success as surveys of 30 projects of intangible cultural heritage in Zhongshan have carried out. Two lists of municipal intangible cultural heritages were released and illustrated books of municipal intangible cultural heritages were published. Zhongshan Salty Water Songs, Xiao Lan Chrysanthemum Fair, Drunken Dragon Dance, Bai Kou Lianshan Song, Crane Dance, Huang Pu Kylin Dance, Huang Pu Floating color are listed in Masterpieces of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Guangdong. Nan Lang town and Huang Pu town got the provincial honor of ¡°Town of National Folk Arts¡± while Xiao Lan town, Sha Xi town, Da Chong Town and Tan Zhou town won the national honor of ¡°Town of National Folk Arts¡±.
A series of books on Zhongshan history and culture are also edited and published, including Cultural Series of Zhongshan History and Culture, Atlas of Ancient Architecture Arts in Zhongshan, Historical and Cultural Series of Cui Heng, Intangible Cultural Heritage of Zhongshan, On Government by the People and Local Self-Government and so on.Go Back
