The cultural industry in Zhongshan has developed rapidly over the past years and has formed a relatively integral industrial system, covering the industries of cultural tourism, culture and art, cultural entertainment, broadcasting, the press and publishing, films, printing, advertising, arts training, web service, exhibition, cultural intermediaries, and manufacturing and marketing of cultural articles and facilities and so on. More famous brands and scenic spots have appeared, like Former Residence of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, Xiang¡¯shan Commercial and Cultural Musuem, China Radio Museum, Zhan Garden, Zhongshan town, Boya Arts, Wenhua cinema, Shiyu Amusement Park and so on. The pillar industries have also taken preliminary shapes with income of 5 industries, say printing, cultural tourism, cultural entertainment, pressing and publishing and broadcasting, account for 90% of the total income of the culture industry.
There are more than 1,400 printing houses, 181 singing and dancing entertainment venues, 188 video games places, 314 work units engaged in audiovisual businesses, 13 performance troupes for business, 140 net bars, 300 bookshops and 190 kiosks in Zhongshan. With annual production value of 16 billion yuan and profit payments and tax turnover of 4 billion yuan, the industry of printing and duplication becomes the pillar industry of Zhongshan and one of the most competitive industries in the world. More than 50,000 employees work in the industry and a national package and printing base is established. Another important industry in Zhongshan is game and entertainment industry with the sales value of related products occupies nearly half of the market share in China. In 2008, the total value of the industrial output reached 2 billion yuan. In 2007, the added value of culture industry reached 8.1 billion yuan. The added value of the core layer, the external layer and relevant layers reached 1.8 billion, 0.8 billion yuan and 5.4 billion yuan with an annual increase of 47.94%, 39.95% and 17.45% respectively. The whole industry took up 6.7% of the GDP and industries of sports and entertainment realized taxation of 96 million yuan in 2007.
Directed by the principle of ¡°supporting the excellent, supporting the strong and supporting the innovative¡±, industries of printing, video games and cultural tourism are booming to promote further development of culture industries in Zhongshan. The 18th China International Amusement Machine Expo and China (Zhongshan) International Animation Gaming Industry Fair2008 held in Zhongshan not only played an important role in establishing the games machine manufacturing base in Zhongshan, providing platforms for technologies, products, and logistics services of national games industry, but also greatly upgraded the international influences and competitiveness of the industry in Zhongshan.
