Sanjiao kylin dance: Kylin dance is a kind of folk dances developed by villagers in Sanjiao Town in accordance with the local living customs and totem worship.
Since the end of Qing dynasty, folk artists in Sanjiao Town have been beginning to decorate kylin before the end of lunar year. Till the 28th of the 12th lunar month, folk artists would hold ¡°adding the finishing touch¡± ceremony for kylins in front of the ancestral tablet of the ¡°fire and wind yard¡±, and break the mouth of kylin. In the evening of the Lunar New Year¡¯s Eve, kylin dancers would worship the land in front of a big tree in the village. They would burn firecrackers, pick the greens, beat drums, and then return to the ancestral temple and spit out the greens. During the continuous 15 days from the 1st day to the 15th day of the 1st lunar month, kylin dancers would play kylin dance in the ancestral temple and in front of every house in the village. Wherever kylin comes, households would burn firecrackers to welcome it; some families would even arrange kylins to pick the greens. Besides, kylin dance is invited for celebration on occasions such as birthday celebration, joining the market, joining a gang, and launching of a new ship.Go Back
